road constructionAccording to the Georgia Department of Transportation, 58 workers died in work zones over the last 40 years and tens of thousands of people are injured every year due to a road construction accident. These statistics are alarming and need to change. We believe that knowing (and applying) the rules will significantly help reduce these numbers.

Two laws to remember when you enter into a work zone are the move over law and speeding law. If you abide by these rules, you will keep yourself and others safe.

Obey the Move Over Law

If you notice a work zone approaching, try to switch lanes to be farther away from the workers. If this isn’t possible, it is imperative to slow down so that potential accidents will be reduced.

Adhere to the Speeding Laws

Most drivers see the sign indicating that speeding in a construction zone will result in an increased fine. Speeding in a construction zone is very unsafe for all parties involved and will likely result in a fine. With these fines, points may be placed on your license that could result in a suspension (depending on how many points you already have).

It’s important to act quickly when dealing with the government (which will occur if an accident occurs in a construction zone). For municipalities, you must file notice of a claim within six months of the accident date. For county or state, a notice of claim must be filed within 12 months of the accident date.
